Anything Could Happen in the Golden Age
Steve Hersh has had no artistic training and he hasn’t sold a story in his life. But he wants to write and draw comic books—and get paid for it. Doesn't he know the hard facts about the comic book industry in the 2010s?
No, he doesn't, and why should he? It’s 1938. Comic books first appeared three short years ago. They're so new that the first super-hero hasn’t arrived yet.
“I’ll bet we could do this,” Steve tells his friend Curly. And from disaster to triumph to fresh disaster, they struggle for a foothold in careers behind the scenes of the four-color adventures.
Steve is certain they’ll be remembered as kings of the comic book creators. Seven decades later, history—and you—will have to judge.
KINGS OF THE COMIC BOOKS is a short historical novel of 40,500+ words.
Kings of the Comic Books edition by Martin O'Hearn Literature Fiction eBooks
Martin O'Hearn was best known to me as a comics fan who has taken on the mission of trying to determine who actually wrote and drew the comics stories of years gone by when official credits didn't exist. This book, about the adventures of two fictional creators breaking into comics about the same time as Superman debuted, captures the spirit of the place and times. The author has obviously read and thought a lot about what it must have been like to be a comic book novice at that time, and does a nice job of interweaving his fictional creators into encounters with real-life creators that ring true. The plot is pretty straightforward, but a more complex one isn't really needed -- the point is to communicate the experiences and the feelings of the characters. I appreciate that he included the reality that many of the early comics creators lost their creations to business people taking advantage of them. Creators like Jack Kirby (who co-created Captain America, Thor, the Hulk, the X-Men and many more) and Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster (co-creators of Superman) shared their imaginations with the world, and got little compensation for it, while publishers and movie studios and actors got rich.I quite enjoyed it, and O'Hearn has a pleasant, quick-moving prose style that will get me to look for other fiction by him.

Kings of the Comic Books edition by Martin O'Hearn Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book really makes that "heroic age" when the costumed superhero was born come to life. This is a must-read for any fan of the comic book genre.
